👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 My parents, an architect/dietician (dad) and a registered nurse (mom), moved from the Philippines to the US in the 1980s.
🏙️ My younger brother and I grew up in Bayside, Queens, NYC, but we moved to the Philippines a few years ago to be near our parents (they wanted to retire in their home country).
🌏 I am a dual citizen of the USA and the Philippines.
💡 I've been a Cambly tutor for about 8 years (since 2017).
🩺 My brother and his wife are both doctors.
🧠 I have a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and have a love for many of the sciences. After working for a tech company for 7.5 years, I now only tutor.
🇵🇭 The Philippines was a colony of Spain from 1565-1898 (333 years), and then the US from 1898-1946 (48 years), and briefly occupied by Japan from 1941-1945 at the same time as the US.
🇪🇸 About 21% of Tagalog is Spanish.
🗣️ My parents speak Hiligaynon, a Filipino language that is about 30% Spanish.
📖 Both Hiligaynon and Tagalog are part of the Austronesian language family, sharing some vocabulary and grammar.
📒 They belong to different sub-branches within the Austronesian family.
📔 Tagalog is a Central Philippine language and the basis for the national language, Filipino.
👩‍🏫 Hiligaynon is a Visayan language.
📱 Hiligaynon and Tagalog are not mutually intelligible; speakers of one can't understand the other.
🌐 They are separate languages, like Spanish and French.
🤠 Chavacano, a Filipino dialect, is about 80% Spanish and is understandable to native Spanish speakers.
📚 Chavacano uses a "Spanish dictionary" with "Filipino grammar rules."
🗨️ English and Tagalog are the official languages of the Philippines.
❌ I only speak basic Tagalog but can now generally understand it.
🎓 I learned Spanish and Latin in high school (I've been out of practice for 23 years so no longer good at either of these languages 😹), so I understand the difficulties of learning a new language.

🇵🇭 Filipino heritage – family moved to the U.S. in the 1980s.
👨‍⚕️ Brother’s a doctor (his wife too!) + new baby in the fam 👶, I am a biologist by education, interested in science (especially quantum and astrophysics), technology, current events, I loveeeee world history!!! The only way to ensure a bright future is to study and learn from the past!
