Interests: My favorite hobbies are working out - I enjoy the gym, but you'll also see my treadmill behind me during our lesson - listening to music, reading, writing and relaxing on the beach. If you have any questions during our lesson, please feel free to ask. I’m also available between classes. I was a Regents Spanish and Mathematics tutor for high school students years ago. It was rewarding for me to see them pass their exams at the end of the school year.
My up-to-date cover letter:
To Whom It May Concern:
Although my professional background is in journalism, I have periodically taken some time off to pursue new directions that more accurately cater to my present interests and passions, most notably working with children. I would love the opportunity to combine my knowledge of English grammar with my desire to help youngsters learn preliminary literacy skills as the building blocks they need for successful future endeavors. I am an empathetic person who enjoys helping youths thrive. I strongly believe in promoting critical reading and writing skills in order to establish a solid foundation that paves the way in making a difference in children's lives for years to come.
My main focus as a teacher assistant at First Class Child Care was to establish a warm, friendly bond between myself and preschool-aged children. Daily activities included circle reading time, name-writing, science, arts and crafts and music. Our learning environment was equal-parts educational and fun, which led to smiles on the children’s faces as we greeted each morning. I also gained considerable experience in learning effective solutions to help manage attention and behavioral problems.
In reference to my professional journalism experience: I worked as a freelance proofreader for a close friend of my father, editing a compilation of biographical essays. Additionally, my position as a financial aid assistant for Barry Fox relied heavily on my ability to be extremely accurate in processing and proofreading financial data for assistance in college tuition. Likewise, as a proofreader at Cambridge Who’s Who Publishing, I was responsible for ensuring the accuracy of thousands of professional biographies. Relevantly, at Professional Sports Publications, I meticulously verified advertising documents within their highly deadline-driven sports marketing environment in Midtown, Manhattan. I developed strong interpersonal skills, having had to work closely with both marketing and editorial directors. Furthermore, I edited and wrote news articles as an assistant editor at Floor Covering News, and I covered a variety of features as a reporter for the Washington Square News, New York University's campus newspaper.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Kerri Becker
